Ebook About AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The twisty new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and A Stranger in the HouseA weekend retreat at a cozy mountain lodge is supposed to be the perfect getaway . . . but when the storm hits, no one is getting awayIt's winter in the Catskills and Mitchell's Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing--maybe even romantic--weekend away. It boasts spacious old rooms with huge woodburning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a good murder mystery. So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity--and all contact with the outside world--the guests settle in and try to make the best of it.Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead--it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, they start to panic. Within the snowed-in paradise, something--or someone--is picking off the guests one by one. And there's nothing they can do but hunker down and hope they can survive the storm--and one another.Book An Unwanted Guest: A Novel Review :
There were so many details that just didn't make sense. For starters, Gwen and Riley. Two young professional women going to a romantic Inn in the Catskills. Of course they are a couple, right? No. They aren't. And guess who else is at the romantic inn? A single guy, alone. Because that's where single guys go to get away by themselves. It could have been made slightly convincing if he had some kind of hobby he was pursuing in the area, but he didn't. He was maybe going to go snowshoeing. There is also a single woman, but she is trying to finish up a book so that's somewhat believable. So the four oddballs and three couples are all at the remote inn and there is a big snow storm that is worse than expected. One of the men is super rich, they are all reasonably affluent, and the Inn has an elaborate freestanding bar made entirely of ice by contractors they bring in every year. It's supposed to be a luxury place. The electric goes out and the roads are completely impassable. The luxury inn has no flashlghts. No generator. No cell service. No landline, as the phones weren't working. The heat doesn't work when the electric is out, possible but odd.. And apparently no vehicle equipped with a snowplow. The characters walk around with oil lamps. Because I guess fire isn't an issue in the most poorly equipped remote lodging in the first world (OK, I guess it's better than candles, but still). All the idiot guests let their cell phones go dead using them as flashlights. Why? Because it's so dark at night they can't see their hands in front of them. Outside. When everything is covered in snow. The author has the moonlight coming and going like the moon going behind a cloud results in the same degree of darkness as being in a windowless cellar. Why they couldn't charge their cellphones in a car was the best mystery in the book. One guy decides to go for a walk, but can't get twenty feet because the surface is icy. So icy that they apparently can't see footprints around a broken window, near a dead body, or in the trail of someone who runs off. Although that person is able to run off, unlike the guy who couldn't walk 20 feet and had to crawl back. So, anyway, there is a thick layer of ice on fresh snow.People start showing up dead. There aren't too many clues or false leads, not convincing ones. Before the reveal, the story unfolds from the perspective of two remaining characters, and this pretty explicitly eliminates them as suspects. So there is hardly anyone left. Then at the very end there is a trivial twist that anybody would see coming a mile away. The Couple Next Door by the same author was a great read. I don't understand why this was published in this condition. It's awful. Shari's first book, "The Couple Next Door," was so exciting I read it in one sitting. I was delighted when she came out with the second one, which wasn't nearly as fun, but I thought the problem was my mood while reading. I read it, too, in one sitting, and gave it five stars. I pre-ordered "An Unwanted Guest" and could not wait to get my hands on it! I even told my cardiologist that I had to live until August 7th because I really needed to read a new book I'd ordered.I know it's not easy to write a cozy if you've never tried before. I have to give Shari five stars just for completing one. But there are problems. I've been forcing myself to pick it up every day for a week now and just can't get interested. The setting is ridiculous. Who in this day and age and in their right mind would go to stay in a dismal old hotel in the back of beyond with no wifi or generator during bad weather? How dumb are these people -- both the owners and the guests?! Why would there even be such a place? The whole "trapped!" business could have been done so much better. The characters are one dimensional. Even Riley, who I assume is supposed to be the well-fleshed-out crackpot of the group, only seemed mildly (and uninterestingly) schizophrenic. And they all sound/think the same. It's hard to tell one boring character from the other. I was going largely by name and haircolor, although that didn't even keep them straight. And what's with the lawyer? Who made him an expert on anything? He's a lawyer -- they're a dime a dozen everywhere. Why would the owners (and that annoying lawyer) insist on leaving a dead body in place, in full view, in a building full of guests? Put her outside in the ice so she doesn't spread bacteria while she decomposes. Are these characters brain dead altogether?!I couldn't even figure out the relationships between the characters. Are Gwen and Riley supposed to have a thing for each other? They gaze into each other's eyes, and so forth, but there's nothing else to connect them romantically. And the fighting couple and the breaking-up couple -- everybody is a flat cliche'.I figured out who the Bad Guy was the same way I used to teach students how to create a Bad Guy people wouldn't suspect. It was no surprise. But again, I have to give Shari credit for finishing a cozy that, because I tend to hate cozy novels, at least followed the rules of Story. And bless her for the end. I was so absolutely delighted by the end I can't begin to express it. The shaky body of the book was forgotten when I read the end. The book deserves to be read just so you can enjoy the ending.
