The novel opens up in 1995 when a high school aged Nikki was living in Stillwell, MN. After passing out at a party, she makes it home only to discover that her parents have been killed. The killer still is in the house, and she can hear someone coming up the stairs. Then, the storyline jumps to the present day with FBI Special Agent Nikki Hunt who is the head of a behavioral analysis unit in St. Paul. She has been tracking down a serial killer named Frost. Two frozen girls were discovered in her old hometown. Since there were some similarities with Frost’s killings, Nikki was called in to assist by the local Sheriff. The novel proceeds from this point. The main storyline consists of two threads. The first thread is the search for the killer of the two girls. Nikki’s team consists of another special agent, Liam, and a crime scene investigator, Courtney. This thread has many twists, turns, and misdirections that quickly captured and kept my interest. There are references to Nikki’s current major investigation of Frost. The second thread deals with the murder of her parents. The Innocent Project has taken up an effort to overturn the original conviction. Nikki was the star witness at the trial. The current sheriff was a deputy and the lead investigator for her parents’ murder. He is not the only person who plays a role in both threads. Several characters have significant roles in both threads. This second thread lays the Nikki character bare and is much more edgy than the other thread. It has its own twists and turns. I wanted to see how this thread turns out as much as the other thread. The B-storyline for the most part is the second main storyline thread so it is quite extensive. Several of the characters are roles in each thread also have extensive B-storylines. This created a rich environment and put much depth to the main storyline threads. Unfortunately, that is not true for the other members of her team, and this disappointed me. Additionally, there was aspect of the novel was inconsistent to me. It was an action by Nikki that I found questionable as it didn’t seem consistent with her character. There are not any intimate scenes, but just some pre-activity. None was graphic. There is a low level of vulgar language. Violence does occur primarily against women. Most of it is described after the fact so it is not as edgy. These three aspects were well within acceptable limits for me, and, I believe, for most readers. As for what I liked about this novel, it did capture my interest quickly and kept it throughout the novel but not to the level in the title, “A completely unputdownable (sic) crime thriller.” I liked the way that the author blended these two main storylines in such a way that it was not confusing to follow each thread even when a scene contributed to both threads. Reading this novel was relatively easy as it took me less than my average time to read. There were not any loose ends by the end in both main storyline threads. There are plenty of avenues that can contribute to follow-on novels in this series.Overall, I was glad to read this novel. It was good but not excellent. I rate it with four stars. I absolutely love this writers Lucy Kindle series and if you haven’t read those I I would highly recommend doing so. This book however was awful and about 1/4 through it I had to skim it.it’s basically one of those murder mysteries where the author takes a few chapters of every other book you’ve ever read and throws them into her own story: girl finds parents brutally murdered and becomes FBI agent. Tick. Call love interest might be the killer. Tick. New love interest could be the killer. Tick. Helpful person not really in the investigation turns out to be the killer and put the FBI agent in a perilous position in which she barely escaped with her life. Tick. Pretty much the same book you’ve read time and time again . nothing new, fresh or interesting.
