Book Midlife Mojo: Paranormal Women's Fantasy (Not Too Late Book 3) Review :

Victoria Danann creates such wonderful worlds and such amazing characters. This series is no exception. Midlife Mojo is the third book in the Not to Late Series. In the first book, Rita was offered a dream job (well, my dream job) which included living in a picturesque British village filled with magical beings. She is to be the Magistrate, a human chosen by the Powers that Be to judge disputes between the nonhuman beings. In the latest book she is learning to feel much joy in her new life, building strong friendships, and perhaps even falling in love. Even with the rumours that Queen Maeve is stepping down and that Diarmuid will be the new king, things are going along rather smoothly. She may be shaking up things with her judgments in court, but despite a mad Kelpie, she seems to be winning the support of the community. Then her daughter shows up a week early. And why is the Jersey Devil paying Rita visits at night? This was a delight read. It was hard to put down and I can’t wait until the next one comes out. I would just love to go to one of Rita’s special luncheons as well as eat at the pub and visit the shops in the village.
**MINOR SPOILERS**This book is the third book in the Not Too Late series. I do not recommend reading it as a standalone. Though I have not read the whole series, it seems to be part of an interconnected whole story. Context would be missed if you jumped into the middle of the story. In addition, some of the characters and interactions from the first two books color this book and reading it makes more sense knowing what has happened before.Rita, a human, was selected to be a magistrate for the magical world. This book introduces her daughter and a new fae king. It has an overlying threat from the previous book that results in a cliffhanger ending. Since this was not the main focus of the story, it was more like a way to tie in the next book. The plot lines from this book were resolved otherwise. The majority of the story related to Rita’s cases as magistrate. I did think that there should have been an overlying story related to one of the cases or something else and could have dinged this book a star for that, but I enjoyed the story so I did not. I have been reading the books quickly in order and it felt like the continuation of the story. If I had picked this book up on its own, I would have felt it needed more punch.I liked the continuing relationships in the story including the one with Kier and Rita. The secondary characters in the book are interesting and round out the world. One of them, Esmeralda, had a surprising scene which raised some unexpected questions. Rita’s daughter also met a goblin shopkeeper and it was unclear if anything happened when she did. Rita’s daughter, Evie, and the new fae king begin a relationship. A bit more of this could have been brought out.The book needed editing in some spots. A few cases, you have to read a section twice to make sure you understand who is speaking. The book has humor. The dialogue is realistic.I like this series so far and plan to read the next book in the series.
